75 Miles of River, Rapids, and Refreshment: The Ultimate Kayak Adventure from Rosman to Asheville
Join Kilson Outdoors on an unforgettable 75-mile kayaking expedition down the French Broad River—where adventure, fishing, and great beer come together in the most epic way possible.
Every year, we set out on this four-day float from Rosman, North Carolina, to Asheville, navigating rapids, fishing for trout, and camping along the riverbanks. It’s the perfect mix of challenge and relaxation, with stops at four incredible breweries along the way to fuel our journey. Whether you’re an experienced paddler or someone looking to push your limits, this trip delivers rugged adventure, breathtaking scenery, and great camaraderie.
The Experience
• Paddle & Fish: Covering 75 miles over four days, we fish for brown and rainbow trout, take breaks at prime fishing spots, and cook our fresh catches over the fire.
• Challenge & Reward: From navigating rapids and clearing river blockages to portaging around obstacles, this trip isn’t always easy—but that’s what makes it so rewarding.
• Breweries & Good Times: Each day ends at a new brewery, where we refill our growlers and enjoy some of the best local food and drinks North Carolina has to offer.
• Day 1: Oscar Blues Brewery
• Day 2: Ecusta Brewing Company
• Day 3: Sierra Nevada Brewing Company
• Day 4: New Belgium Brewing Company (Asheville)
Campsites Along the Way
Each night, we set up camp at carefully chosen locations, each offering a unique experience:
• Night 1: Headwaters Campsite – Just 3 miles from downtown Rosman, this site is facilitated by Headwaters Outfitters and features prime trout fishing spots to start the journey off right.
• Night 2: Riverbend Campsite – A peaceful spot facilitated by a good friend of ours, offering a great place to recharge.
• Night 3: Rhodes Ranch – Nestled in North Carolina’s serene farmland, this campsite was created by a local farm owner who welcomes river-goers to experience the beauty of the area.
• Night 4: Firefighter Island – A river island campsite maintained by volunteer firefighters, with all proceeds going to support their department.

Major Hazards
• Obstructions & Strainers: Downed trees, log jams, and debris are common. Never attempt to clear or navigate an obstacle without the guide’s instruction.
• Rapids & Shoals: Water levels fluctuate, creating unpredictable rapids and strong currents. Be prepared for fast-moving water and sudden depth changes.
• Contaminated Water: The river contains microplastics, heavy metals, and pollutants due to poor conservation and industrial runoff. Avoid drinking or prolonged exposure.
• Hurricane Damage: Hurricane Helene destroyed factories along the river, releasing harmful chemicals. Be cautious with fish consumption.
Critical Safety Rules
• Stay as a Group: Never paddle ahead or fall behind. Always wait for the guide at potential hazards.
• Immediate Stops for Hazards: If an obstruction is spotted, the front paddlers must pull over immediately and wait for instructions. Never stop on or near the obstacle—it’s extremely dangerous.
• Communication is Key:
• The front and rear paddlers carry walkie-talkies for constant updates.
• Those in front must scan for hazards and alert the group immediately.
• Weather & Wildlife Awareness: Be prepared for sudden storms and secure food properly to avoid attracting animals.
• Physical Endurance Required: This trip is strenuous and suited for experienced paddlers or those prepared for endurance challenges.
By following these rules, we ensure a safe and successful adventure. Stay alert, communicate, and trust your guide!
